Whether you’re planning a sunny UK wedding in peak summer or jetting off somewhere gloriously warm, hot weather can be a challenge on your wedding day, but it doesn’t have to be! With a few smart tweaks and some planning ahead, you can keep cool, stay hydrated, and look amazing from you “I do’s” to your last dance. Here’s how to Survive the Heat on Your Wedding Day.
Stay Hydrated
Let’s start with the obvious, drink plenty of water. But don’t just guzzle it when you’re already sweating, start early in the day and keep sipping. Add electrolytes or opt for coconut water for an extra hydration boost. A cute reusable bottle makes it easy to keep close.
Champagne is for toasts, not hydration, sorry!
Wear Light, Breathable Fabrics
Choose outfits made from natural, breathable materials like chiffon, silk, tulle or linen. These will keep you cooler than heavy or synthetic fabrics. Dress wearers, if your dress has layers, consider removing any unnecessary underskirts. Suit wearers, skip the waistcoat and choose a lightweight jacket (or ditch it completely for the reception).
Go for an Updo
Got long hair? This one’s for you. A gorgeous updo or bun will keep hair off your neck and stop you from overheating. A sleek low bun, braided crown, or a soft textured chignon not only looks stunning but keeps you feeling fresh and sweat-free. Bonus: updos hold up better in humidity too!
Embrace Fans, Shade + Cooling Kits
Mini handheld fans (or even wearable neck fans) can make a world of difference. Provide guests with parasols or fans at your ceremony, trust me, they’ll love you for it.
If you’re outside, aim for shade. Under trees, a gazebo, or even a cool, covered Orangery. Cooling cloths and chilled flannels hidden in baskets or bridal prep kits are genius additions.
Don’t Skip SPF
Wearing SPF is crucial, especially for outdoor ceremonies or destination weddings. Make sure your shoulders, chest, ears and nose are protected. A burnt nose or strap mark halfway through the day? Not the vibe.
Heat-Proof Makeup Is Key
Your makeup artist will know what’s best for heat and humidity, but setting spray and oil-control primers are game changers. Keep blotting paper or powder handy for touch-ups, they’ll keep you glowing, not shiny.

Treats That Cool
Cold canapés, an ice cream cart, ice lollies or frozen cocktails can keep guests refreshed and happy. Lemon sorbet as a palate cleanser during dinner? Yes please
Time Portraits Smartly
Plan your couples portraits during cooler times of the day, ideally early morning or golden hour. The light is softer, you’ll feel fresher, and your photographer (hi, it’s me!) will thank you.
Change for the Evening
Dancing in a full gown or a heavy suit post-sunset? Not ideal. A breezy second outfit can be a lifesaver. dress wearers , consider a floaty party dress, and suit wearers, a fresh shirt and linen trousers are just the ticket.
Bonus Tip: Embrace It!
Yes, it’s hot. But you’re marrying your person, it’s going to be magical regardless. Laugh at the sweaty moments, take breathers in the shade, and enjoy every sun-kissed second.
