5 Tips for Wedding Confetti
Your confetti moment is one of the most joyful, emotional and celebratory parts of your wedding day. It is usually the first time you are officially married, walking hand in hand, smiling from ear to ear while your favourite people cheer you on. Absolute magic! But not all confetti moments are created equal. That is why I am sharing my 5 tips for wedding confetti, to help you plan a confetti moment that looks incredible, feels effortless and results in big, floaty, joy filled photos you will absolutely love.
Incorporating the best confetti can truly enhance your celebration. Here are my 5 tips for wedding confetti that will ensure your moment is memorable.
As a Hampshire wedding photographer, I have photographed weddings across the county and beyond at a wide range of venues, and one thing that never fails to elevate wedding photos is a well planned confetti moment. These 5 tips for wedding confetti will help you avoid common pitfalls and get the most out of this iconic wedding moment.
1. Choose the Right Confetti
Let’s start with the most important of all 5 tips for wedding confetti and it makes a huge difference to how your photos look. What you throw matters. A LOT.
These 5 tips for wedding confetti will guide you in choosing the most photogenic options.
Rice paper confetti = elite level confetti
If your venue allows it, rice paper confetti is hands down the best option for photos.
Why it works so well
- It is incredibly light and floaty, so it stays in the air longer
- It shows up beautifully in photos
- It is soft, so it does not hurt when thrown enthusiastically
- It does not get stuck in your hair all day
Dried petals and flowers might sound pretty in theory, but in reality they’re heavier, barely visible in photos, drop straight to the ground and have a habit of getting stuck in places they absolutely shouldn’t. Rice paper confetti is always the best choice.
When selecting confetti, remember these 5 tips for wedding confetti to ensure your day is perfect.

2. Check Your Venue Rules Early
Not the most exciting tip, but a very important one.
Understanding the rules can save you from disappointment, so use these 5 tips for wedding confetti as your checklist.
Many venues have specific rules around confetti, including what is allowed, where it can be thrown and sometimes even colour restrictions. Some venues only allow biodegradable confetti, while others do not allow confetti at all.
Top tip:
Ask your venue about confetti rules as early as possible, not the week before your wedding when panic sets in.
If confetti is not allowed
If your venue does not allow confetti at all, do not panic. There are some beautiful alternatives that still create a joyful, celebratory exit and photograph far better than couples often expect.
Bubbles are one of the best confetti alternatives, especially for outdoor ceremonies. They create movement, catch the light beautifully and add a really romantic, playful feel to photos. Because bubbles float and drift, they work in a similar way to rice paper confetti, filling the space around you without hitting faces or dropping straight to the ground. Bubble exits also tend to last longer, as guests keep blowing rather than throwing once and stopping.
They work particularly well for summer weddings, garden ceremonies and relaxed, modern celebrations.
Ribbon wands are another great option, especially if you want something colourful, elegant and venue friendly. Long ribbons create lovely motion in photos, frame the couple beautifully and are ideal for venues with strict clean up rules. They are also brilliant for indoor spaces where bubbles might not be suitable.
Both bubbles and ribbon wands still give you that “just married” feeling, create interaction from your guests and result in joyful, dynamic images without breaking venue rules.
Remember, these 5 tips for wedding confetti will help you choose the best alternatives when needed.
3. Have Enough Confetti (More Than You Think)
One of the biggest regrets couples tell me about their confetti moment is not having enough.
For truly epic photos, each guest should have at least one generous handful of confetti. Two handfuls is even better. Confetti needs volume to create a proper tunnel effect. If people are trying to ration it like it’s wartime sugar, the confetti moment will be over in seconds. The goal is a proper confetti tunnel… full, floaty and joyful.
Definitely consider confetti cannons
Confetti cannons are also a great addition when used correctly. I recommend giving a couple of cannons to trusted family members, bridesmaids or groomsmen and positioning them part way down the confetti line. This adds height and drama without overwhelming the moment.
Leftover confetti is a far better problem to have than not enough

4. Timing is Everything
Timing plays a huge role in getting great confetti photos.
The best time for confetti is usually straight after the ceremony, while emotions are high and before guests wander off for drinks.
Ask your celebrant or registrar to instruct guests to create 2 lines either side, to form a tunnel for the couple to walk through so they know what to do once the ceremony has ended and can get into position ready for the couple to walk through. If your ceremony space allows, exiting directly into your confetti moment keeps the energy flowing and the smiles completely natural. The confetti moment tends to work best outside where there’s plenty of natural light and space isn’t limited.
5. Walk Slowly and look at Each Other (Not the Ground)
This one is a biggie!
When the confetti starts flying, your instinct might be to rush through it or look down to avoid confetti in your eyes. Totally normal… but resist the urge.
Instead:
-
Walk slowly
-
Stay close together
-
Look at each other, laugh, kiss, spin if it feels natural
The slower you walk, the longer the confetti hangs in the air and the more variety you’ll get in your photos.
Trust me, this final of my 5 tips for wedding confetti is where the magic really happens.
A few Bonus Tips
How to throw confetti so it flutters
Confetti should always be thrown up and over, not straight at the couple. Throwing it upwards allows it to flutter down slowly and naturally. Throwing it directly at faces leads to flinching, closed eyes and some very strange facial expressions.
Keeping this in mind will make your confetti moment even more special, as highlighted in these 5 tips for wedding confetti. Up and over is the goal.
A note on confetti cones
Confetti cones look lovely for display and detail photos, but they do not work well when thrown. Confetti often gets stuck in the cones or drops straight down, and sometimes guests throw the cone itself. If you use cones, ask guests to tip the confetti into their hands before throwing it. Hands create a much better throw and a far prettier result in photos.
