Matthew Lawrence wedding photography workshop | Surrey

Wedding photography workshop with Matt Lawrence

I believe it’s very important as a photographer to regularly invest in education to continually grow as a photographer and gain new skills and ideas. Workshops  help me get inspired and be a better photographer and I really enjoy them.

Yesterday I attended The Matt Lawrence wedding photography workshop in Surrey with my friend and fellow wedding photographer, Hana Venn. (I took her new photos on her about me page on her beautiful new website design) Hana had mentioned the workshop to me and I wasn’t sure about going as it was only very recently that I had attended the Ed Peers wedding workshop and wasn’t sure if I would gain from going to another workshop so soon. In the end I decided that I was going to go as it would be insightful and fun and I was interested in some of the techniques that Matt was going to cover, so the night before the workshop just before I went to bed I messaged Matt and asked if he had any places left. Thankfully he did and Hana kindly offered to drive.

After a long drive up to Surrey in rush hour and lots of chatting and laughing along the way, we arrived at the workshop venue – The Broadway Barn, a quaint little B&B in Ripley. After chatting for a few minutes and grabbing drinks and eating yummy homemade cookies the workshop began.

Matt covered various different topics and I was particularly interested in Pirsming and Freelensing, creative photography techniques invented by the amazing Sam Hurd. After breaking for lunch we did a live shoot with a real couple practising our skills and new techniques. I must admit, I definitely fell in love with the prism! I actually bought one before the workshop and this was my first opportunity to try it out and it produces some really interesting and creative effects, which you will see in the majority of my images from the workshop, below.

After the shoot, Matt downloaded his images and talked about the way he edits and gave us some helpful tips for editing in Adobe Lightroom. We then wrapped up with a Q&A session and a general chat. It was definitely worthwhile and met some other lovely photographers to keep in touch with.

On the way home Hana and I cranked up the music and had a good sing song!

It was Matt’s first ever workshop but he did a great job and I really enjoyed the day.

Here are my photos from the live shoot during the workshop…
